João Gilberto & Stan Getz – Desafinado

This song is and will always be one of my favourite bossa nova standards. I know that there are many versions of “Desafinado” out there, but I wanted to share this one. It’s from the 1964 “Getz/Gilberto” album by Stan Getz and João Gilberto.

I also like the Getz vocal-less saxophone version, but I’ve always wanted to sing this version. Portuguese is a lovely language, but boy, is its pronunciation ridiculously difficult. I envy native Portuguese speakers for this reason.

The English translation I’m using is from BrMusicExplained of YouTube; they have many more translations for internationally popular Brazilian songs on their channel.

Eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu.

English Translation:

Vocals: João Gilberto

Composers: Antônio Carlos Jobim, Newton Mendonça

If you say I’m off-key, my love,
Be aware it causes big pain in me.
Only privileged ones have an ear like yours,
I’ve got only the one God gave me.

If you insist to label
My behaviour as anti-musical.
Even lying, I must argue,
That it’s bossa nova, that it’s very natural.

What you don’t know or even sense
Is that off-key people have a heart as well.

I took a picture of you with my Rolleiflex,
Your huge ingratitude was developed.
You just can’t say so about my love,
It’s the greatest you can find, you see?

You, with your music, forgot the essential:
That inside off-key peoples’ chests, at the bottom of the chest, beats silently
Inside off-key peoples’ chests, a heart beats as well.
